Botswana offers an authentic wilderness experience, where wildlife roams freely and animals may occasionally pass close to camps and lodges. This is part of what makes a Botswana safari so special.
For your safety, always follow the advice of your guides and lodge staff. You will receive guidance on how to behave around wildlife, and in many safari camps you may be escorted to and from your room after dark.
Travel Tip: Never approach or feed wild animals, and always follow your guide’s instructions. With experienced guides and sensible precautions, you can relax and enjoy Botswana’s extraordinary wildlife safely.
The best time for Botswana safari holidays is generally from April to October, during the dry season when wildlife gathers around rivers and waterholes and is often easier to spot.
June to August brings cooler, dry weather and excellent safari conditions. Early mornings and evenings can be surprisingly cold, so warm clothing is recommended for game drives.
July to October is particularly popular for the Okavango Delta, Moremi and Chobe, with excellent wildlife viewing. September and October can become very hot.
November to March is Botswana’s green season. The landscape becomes lush, migratory birds arrive and many animals give birth, making this a rewarding time for photographers and repeat safari visitors.
Travel Tip: The Okavango Delta’s floodwaters arrive from Angola months after the rains fall, so water levels do not simply follow Botswana’s rainy season. Conditions vary from year to year, and we can recommend the best areas and camps for your travel dates.

Health: Travellers should check the latest health advice before visiting Botswana. Yellow fever vaccination certification may be required when arriving from a country where there is a risk of yellow fever transmission.
Malaria is present in parts of Botswana, particularly in northern safari areas. Speak to your doctor or travel health professional about suitable malaria precautions before travelling.
Money: The local currency is the Botswana Pula (BWP). Major credit cards are widely accepted at many safari lodges and hotels, although carrying some local currency can be useful.
Safari Costs: Botswana is renowned for its high-quality, low-density safari experiences. Many camps are located in remote wilderness areas and prices can be higher than in some other safari destinations, but there are options for different budgets and travel styles.
Electricity: Botswana operates on a 230V electricity supply. Plug types commonly include Type D, G and M. We recommend travelling with a universal adaptor.

Getting there: Maun is the main gateway for safaris in the Okavango Delta and many of Botswana’s northern wildlife areas. Kasane is the main gateway for Chobe National Park and is also conveniently located for combining Botswana with Victoria Falls.
Internal Flights and Transfers: Many of Botswana’s safari camps are in remote wilderness areas and are reached by light aircraft. Depending on your itinerary, transfers may also include 4×4 vehicles, boats or traditional mokoro excursions.
Weight & Luggage Restrictions: Light aircraft used for safari transfers have strict luggage restrictions. Allowances vary between airlines and routes, and soft-sided bags are usually required as storage space on small aircraft is limited.
We will advise you of the exact luggage allowance for the flights included in your itinerary before you travel. Hard-shell suitcases and large wheeled cases may not be suitable for light aircraft transfers.
Travel Tip: Pack light for your Botswana safari. Most safari camps offer laundry services, making it easier to travel with a smaller, soft-sided bag.
