Waterhole and Salt Lick, Chimpanzee sanctuary

The Chimpanzee Sanctuary is the only one of its kind in Kenya. Visitors can enjoy the unique opportunity of observing the chimps by boat on the Ewaso Nyiro River which flows through the middle of the one-square-kilometre Sanctuary. The riverine forest and savannah grasslands that make up the Sanctury are home to 26 orphaned chimpanzees varying in age from 2 to 15 years.

Most of the chimps now at Sweetwaters came from the Jane Goodall Institute in Burundi, where a great many were placed after being rescued from a miserable existance. Poco spent 6 years of his life imprisoned in a small bird cage suspended from the roof of a garage in Bujumbura, Burundi. Now Poco is a handsome, contented chimpanzee, able to explore his habitat, climb trees and interact with his many companions.

Not all that long ago, there were one million chimps in the wild. Now as a result of hunting, poaching and habitat destruction, their number has plummeted. There are literally hundreds of orphaned chimps throughout Africa, victims of illegal chimp trade.

Also at Sweetwaters is Morani, a tame black rhino born in 1974, who was brought here after his mother was killed by poachers. He now lives a happy and comfortable life in his own compound at Sweetwaters. A visit to Morani is a must; an especially wonderful treat for children.
