Few
places evoke such romance as the fabled spice islands of
Zanzibar, Pemba and Mafia. Places of great wealth and
power in the turbulent history of East Africa, they are
today sleepy islands with beautiful unspoilt beaches and
lush tropical vegetation, redolent of the cloves,
cinnamon and other spices which flourish everywhere. The Capital City, Zanzibar, is divided into two sections: Stone Town, a world Heritage site, and Ngambo. Narrow roads meander between buildings, some over a century old, with noticeable Arab architectural style. Existing ruins comprise of 15th to 19th Century palaces, towns and mosques. Each island possesses interesting relics, but those of Zanzibar are of special interest. The former Sultan Palace, set in gardens , near the Arab Fort and Beit el Ajaib, the Sultan's House of Wonders.
The Marahubi Palace built for the harem of a Sultan Prince in 1878 and the Kidichi Baths, a gift from an earlier Sultan to his Persian wife. Many an explorer stayed on in Zanzibar and the houses where Livingstone and Burton lived can still be seen today. Zanzibar offers a unique combination of history, culture, friendly people and beautiful unspoilt beaches. The "Jewel on the Indian Ocean" still is a favourite destination, just as it was for early seafarers and explorers. |

The fascinating
combination of Arabic and African cultures are best
experienced from its historic Stone Town. Spend 2 or 3
days in Stone Town before heading out to discover the
unspoilt white sandy beaches and coral reefs. The white sands are lined by quaint villages full of character . The reef attracts a wide range of sea life of special interest to big game fishing, scuba diving and snorkelling . Soak up the sun, enjoy the warm waters of the Indian Ocean and relax on the brilliant white beaches of this picturesque paradise. A trip to Zanzibar can make a perfect compliment to a wild adventure in the bush and may be combined with any of our Tanzania or Kenya Safaris. |
